Cyclocross

The Pony Shop Juniors team started as a cyclocross team and cyclocross is our most attended and active program with over 30 active junior riders. Cyclocross is a fall and winter sport, and we begin trail rides in late August and early September, while weekday practices start in September after Labor Day. Racing typically starts in the last week of August to early September. Practices and races continue until the national championships, usually in December.

What is cyclocross?

Cyclocross is a type of bike racing that originated in Belgium, and is best described as racing a road bike in off-road conditions. The season happens during the fall and early winter, and races happen in all weather conditions - rain, snow, shine, or all three here in Chicago! Races in the Chicago 'cross series usually take place in local parks or forest preserves, and are very spectator friendly. The Pony Shop Juniors team sets up a compound of tents, tables, food, and support at USA Cycling cyclocross races we attend, mostly Chicago area races and the Chicago Cross Cup. We typically have multiple riders who attend the national championships and major international races held in the Midwest (currently Waterloo, WI, Fayetteville, AR, and Indianapolis, IN).

Join us for the 2024 cyclocross season!

'Cross is one of the most popular sports among the Pony Shop Juniors. We have multiple practices during the week during the cyclocross season to help our racers prepare, and a robust presence at races to provide support and community to our team and their families.
